Question linking to files

this is an ie based problem

I'm making an intranet system for my shools comuting department as part of my advanced higher course

basically when i link to a .doc file ie opens it within ie

anyway to force it to open in word?

similarly with other files is there anyway to aviod the save/open/cancel prompt?

The browsers at school are all ie 6, windows 98se

I cant change the settings in ie (locked down by admins)

thanks in advance!

There are a few ways to avoid documents opening automatically.

One is to 'zip' the files.
Another is to use scripting (PHP, CGI, ASP) to force a download.

There really isn't anyway to avoid the prompt. It is a security issue.
