Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz or Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz

Hello all,

I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this sort of question but I will give a go anyway...recently I upgraded my Win2K to Win XP Pro and now I am facing upgrade of the motherboard and processor in my computer. Thing is I am not sure what processor to put in. I am thinking about Intel Celeron 2.4GHZ but many people told me Intel Pentium 4 is much better processor for XP. I have found both processors in the local computer shop and prices are quite close so I am not sure what to pick. Intel Celeron 2.4GHz or Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz...Any suggestions?

In my experience, the P4 runs 20-30% faster than the Celeron for the same clock rate. Both will run XP. Another issue is video. Lower cost systems use "shared memory" where the video steals memory (and cycles) from the processor. Cheaper than a separate video card at a performance price. Especially with high-resolution displays. Most motherboards support 4x or 8x AGP video. A good investment. XP also likes a LOT of memory. It will run in 128Meg, better in 256. My latest machine has 512, XP pro, and other than file sharing problems, runs like a bat.

What do you mostly use your computer for?

I would use the 1.8 northwood, but you had better make sure it is a northwood (478 socket), this one has 512K cache

there is an older version P4 1.8 with only 256K cache (423 socket)

the celeron only has 128K cache.

for real memory intensive numbercrunching, the 1.8 should do better than the cellie

of course the alternative is to go athlon
they are much cheaper and put in a good performance (somewhat between celeron and p4 for average computing)
I run an athlon xp 2600+ barton processor on and msi KT4V mobo (agp8x and onboard lan)

eh... I've always been partial to pentiums myself. Over AMD that is. I don't know much about celeron vs pentium... but if you have the money, I suggest go for the Pentium.

I dont know what you will be using your PC for but its worth noting that you can run celerons with alot less cooling. This means you dont have to have a fan that makes a noise like a leaf blower in your PC I have two PC's, one is P4 2.5Ghz for gaming and one is a Celeron 2.5 Ghz. I use the P4 for gaming and the Celeron for the internet and work. If you are only using your PC for things like internet, work, music or digital video editing then their really isnt much point going for the P4. You might as well spend the money you save by buying a Celeron on some more memory.
