Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. That can tell you a lot about your system's suitability.

Come back with any questions you may have after running that.

Right click Computer and in the menu that opens, left click Properties.

In the window that opens, it will tell you whether it's 32 or 64 bit in the System category.

One gig of RAM is the minimum for Win 7. The other minimums are 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor, 16 GB available hard disk space, DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

"Minimum" means Win7 will run on those specs but it will not necessarily run well. It won't run as well as XP would with those specs.

If the netbook came with Win7 preinstalled and it's still under warranty, installing another operating system will void the warranty.

In order to install XP, you will need to make sure you can find the hardware drivers that will work with XP. If the netbook is new, it's unlikely you'll find the drivers you need since many manufacturers do not bother to write drivers for older operating system for their newest components.

You'll also need a way to install XP since most netbooks do not have CD/DVD drives and you will need a copy of XP that is not currently installed on any other system.

okay that sounds too complicated

let me review and see if you agree

netbooks , at least my bottom of the line model, are not powerful enought to run win 7 without hiccups and are poorly specified for the job .

if i threw this thing in trash, what are the parameters for netbooks to browse, and do occaisonal simple spread sheet?

I have no experience with netbooks so I can't help with recommendations on them. I suggest you ask in our Hardware forum.

You had asked "if i threw this thing in trash, what are the parameters for netbooks to browse, and do occaisonal simple spread sheet?"

My answer is to ask the hardware experts in our Hardware forum since I have no experience with netbooks.
