PC is extremely slow and.....

Recently i noticed that my computer was running slower than usual. It's gotten worse and worse over the last 2 weeks. I play games on pogo, and when i'm there it sounds like there are things running in the background and when i look at the processes, there is one called Iexplore that is always in the 100,000+ range. Cpu usuage is way high as well. I have Fix-It on my computer and when i try to run a malware scan with it, it freezes up before it is done. It seems something weird is happening with my norton as well, but i can't quite put my finger on it, but sometimes the icon that is supposed to be in the taskbar doesn't show up. I am afraid that i have something bad going on. I have ran HJT and Combo Fix and i'm including the logs. I hope someone can help. This is very frustrating. Oh also...the computer sometimes freezes up at other times as well.

Hello daladypaints,

Unlike HijackThis and other scan tools, ComboFix is a direct-repair change maker program. And should not be run unless it is recommended by a malware removal team person in a forum repair thread. Really better to wait for a thread response and ask, than choosing and running scans.

Having typed all that, this log doesn't show anything amiss so far. Let's get a different view and check further.

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop, then click on the RSIT.exe to start the scan.

If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.

The logs show two antivirus softwares in some form of install there, with both Norton and Sunbelt's Vipre. This will cause conflicts and slowdowns, and lead to software and settings corruptions, so you need to choose one and uninstall the other. Since the logs don't show the Vipre uninstall listing perhaps what shows now is a partial uninstall of that. If so, go here and download their CS&VClean.exe uninstaller. Then disable all security software, click that downloaded file and follow all prompts to uninstall Vipre. Being sure to reboot after.

Then post back if that brought about the improvements you needed please.

Hi Jintan...

I did as you requested and it seems to have helped a tiny bit, but i'm still getting that "something is running in the background" going on. While playing scrabble on pogo today, it started doing that. I checked my process and iexplore had gotten up to 416,220. Right now it 176,780 and this webpage is all i have open. Is it supposed to be that hight? I look forward to your reply.

Pogo is I assume Flash Player-based web game files. There is a current alert on Flash Player, and also Adobe's Reader, but as it is a newly discovered issue I am not real sure how a user would experience an event of malware misusing those programs.

To err on the side of caution, first make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

Right click My Computer, left click Explore, and use the plus + symbols to navigate the the following hilighted files, and if located, rename them by adding ".old" to the name (example - authplay.dll.old):

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0]\Acrobat\authplay.dll

---------------

Then disable your antivirus program and go here and run an online scan using ESET Online Scanner (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan, or download the installer to run it in a different browser). If you accept the Terms of Use, check the box and click Start. After the ActiveX Control has loaded, it will take a couple minutes for the scanner to get ready. Next, check the following boxes:

Remove found threats
Scan unwanted applications

Click Start. This scan may take a while, so please be patient. A log may open when the scan is complete (if not, go to C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\ and open the file log.txt). Click Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here please.

Yes, Java has to be enabled before Flash Player files will run. I did check, and yes, Pogo is all Flash Player, so better to go ahead with the steps I posted now.
