Constantly losing internet

I can't take it anymore. I know I have an old modem, SB3100, but I doubt it is my problem! I don't want to replace my modem, router and then be told they aren't the problem, not everyone has money to throw out. I am constantly losing packets and I can't take it anymore! I hate waiting to connect to the internet, I hate it all.

Look at my problem!

There's my problem. I can't stay connected to the internet and I don't know where to start before dishing out money. If I am told "Receiving problem is the router" I'll go buy a new one. or "Receiving problem is modem" I'll replace it! But I need to know the problem before replacing my entire house and be told something just needs to be updated, screwed in tightly or blown in. PLEASE help me.
Only sometimes I get a stray lost packet, but it is usually after so many sent. Please help me.

  • A clear explanation of the problem you are having
    • What doesn't work
My internet is constantly losing packets, disabling me from having a constant connection. (Playing game
    • What does works
The internet works when not downtime. Speed is just as good as it ever was. Activity on the modem is not the usual, and on the router, the light hooked up to my computer stays constant when timing out.
    • What you've tried
I have tried blowing in the ports, I had them unhooked overnight, unhooking EVERYTHING. Bypassing the splitter, going straight from modem to computer(Didn't work). I diagnosed it, repaired it, tried static IP address... Switched the blue cables around.. Unplugged extra junk on the thingie with all the plugs available.

Hi Xeno-Felix,

nailing down an issue like this remotely can be difficult, but lets give it a go.

I need you to run a few more commands.

run ping -t to your default gateway to make sure you don't see any timeouts there, or even a big spike in ping times.

run tracert www.google.com and post the results back. (you may want to run this a few times to see if times varies or if it fails at all)

You said you had aother PCs on your LAN, do they experience problems too?

The other computer does experience that problem. At the time, the user experienced this and I happened to be trying to run many tabs at once with many graphics, so I seen nothing of the slow-appearing internet. I've tried the same on that computer as I did this one(the diagnosing, repairing and such).

Hops 2 and 8 timing out all the time is most likely because the routers at those hops are set not to respond to 'trace' request.

Now hop 3 is a different story, you got a response some of the time, so we know it is setup to respond, now why did you get time outs.

Can you run ping -t to 98.185.130.70 and 24.249.37.149 and see if you hit any time outs.

-cough- I said something stupid and edited it.
And I'm going to edit again. I connected it to the modem and figured out how to make the internet work for it. I thought it was interesting when I did tracert google.com. It may be useless though.

Xeno-Fenix,

The tracert without the modem show the same hops, denying the tracert request, the numbers are different by one because you took the router out so there is one less hop.

That last failure is interesting as it appears to be a DNS lookup failure. But I guess that could be caused by network timeouts.

Can you look at the section on setting your MTU on this page and give it a try. Lets make sure something as simple as a misconfigured MTU isn't causing you grief.

I checked in cmd, 1400 worked - so I typed 1400 in the MTU box, pressed save and rebooted. Didn't fix :{

No xChadx, I have cox.

Did you run for a while with just the modem? If so did you experience drops still?

Xeno-Fenix,

XChadX makes a good point. The drops could be due to the quality of the cable coming to your house. It could be your modem or a dozen other things. It does not looks like a software or configuration issue.

Contacting your ISP and tellingthem that this is not acceptable seems to be the way to go.
