Cool Help pls with my HJT log (moved from Cyber Safety Forum)
Hey guys,

Long time since I've been here (but that's a good thing right? :-)

Could someone please look into my Hijackthis log.
My computer is acting really strange lately:
- Slow...
- Explorer.exe hangs all the time, especially when I'm trying to read from a CD + the process crashes a lot as well
- VERY SLOW...

I already ran a anti virus/spyware test.

Hi striderke. Were any malware files found?

I cant see any evidence of malware in your log but I do see some Norton startups and you also have AVG running. Is Norton still installed?

Hi AnnMarie

Thanks for your reply.
No nothing specific and/or dangerous was found.
Norton was there on the original installation but I uninstalled it quite fast :-)
But I see there is still the Symantec LiveUpdate en LiveUpdate Notice.
Maybe that is what you mean?

Yes but there is also another Norton startup. It would be a good idea to go here and run the online Norton Removal Utility. It should get rid of Norton traces. Reboot afterwards and tell me if this made any difference. Also post a new Hijack This log.

Is there a way I can check my windows installation itself for errors? (Vista)
Without making any changes to the current installatie/setup...

Maybe the problems lays there?

Well you can run the System File Checker to check for corrupted files but for other issues, you will need the Vista installation DVD. Do you have one?

To run SFC, click on the Start orb and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Once the Command Prompt opens, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit Enter. The System File Checker will start. It might take a while to complete so be patient. Reboot when it has completed and let us know if this helped.

Thanks anyway for your help annmarie.

The laptop came pre-installed with vista.
I think I have a recovery dvd at home (I'm at work at the moment), but that won't get me any further right now :-)

I'll guess I'll try it later tonight

To the best of my knowledge, your Recovery DVD cant be used to run a Startup Repair striderke. The retail DVD is required to do this.

Try running sfc /scannow. It might well fix the problem (reboot afterwards). If not, try cleanbooting and run this way for a day (see here, Step 1: Perform a clean boot). Dont troubleshoot it yet and make sure you dont download anything or surf to dodgy sites while you are running in this state because your antivirus will be disabled. Did you notice any difference?

Sorry for the late response AnnMarie.

Things seemed to be working better since last thursday untill yesterday :-)
Again the explorer.exe process started failing over and over again.
I rebooted, it stopped, but for how long...

I'll perform a Startup Repair tonight and hope for the best.
I managed to find the Windows Vista retail DVD that came with the laptop.

Thanks in advance. I don't know if you should still consider this topic as open, if that doesn't work I'll probably format the whole thing
