Changing the Saved Games Folder Location
Hello everyone,
How can I change the location of the saved games folder so that my game can load it from anywhere that I put it? I know that you go to My Documents and then My Games etc. BUT I installed Halo (Combat Evolved for PC) on my usb drive (yes it does work) and I wanted to play it wherever I go but the thing is the saved games will always stay only on one computer and it wont go with the usb drive when I play it on another computer. I also know you could just copy and paste the folders into the flash drive every time I finish playing but I wanted to find an alternative for doing that by just directing the game to save its games in the usb drive. Anyone know how? Operating system is Windows XP. Thanks a lot guys, John |

You can't. It's hardcoded into the game.

Well, theoretically you can when games use the user's My Documents folder for their savegames but not for the circumstances you are describing.
Most games will follow the Windows path to "My Documents/My Games". This can be changed from the 2k/XP/Vista default location, but this would not be appropriate when you are using multiple "host" PCs to play the game. Might be easier to write a simple batch script to copy the files to and from the flash drive before and after playing. |

Yes, they might use the %HOMEPATH% variable or something similar, which can be changed in the registry or by using Tweak XP. Also some of these folders have the option to Move in their properties dialog. But I don't think Windows would be too happy having these on a removable drive, let alone one using the same folder with multiple PCs. And of course you wouldn't be able to use the PC at all without having the flash drive plugged in.

Here's you solution...
Make a script or shortcut and put in the target box after the file name" -path (directory of folder). Try it and it should work. Good Luck.

Hi Mclovin223 and welcome to CTH.
As far as I was aware, the "-path" commandline variable only applies to Halo Dedicated Server. |

No, It works with the Halo game. It came with update 1.03.

OK, did a little research, from what I've read on Bungie, 1.03 was dedicated server only but 1.07 says it can be used on the client. Possibly worked on 1.03 but wasn't documented.
Sweet, nice find. |

No Problem
I'm currently trying to make a portable version of Halo for Portable Apps and I needed this. I read the forum too and decided to help.
