sound help

Hi, I have an IBM thinkpad 390X laptop that I got from a friend. When i got it I was told that the sound didn't work. I ended up putting linux on it to try it out, now I want sound. The sound card must be fried because when I try to use the sound I get a lot of static, but some sound comes through. Could i use one of those external USB sound cards for sound?

Thanks.

Welcome to CTH

Could be the drivers, or not configured right. The windows audio driver is HERE

I don't see a Linux one.
