Thumbs down Memory upgrade on a Gateway laptop MT6728

I recently purchase two 2 Gig cards to replace the 1 Gig cards in a gateway MT6728 laptop.
I tried a 1st set and started to boot windows vista once and once only and then locked up. After that I could not get past the bios bootup I was never able to get to window vista booting. I ordered another set of 2 gig memory chips and it does the same thing. I can not get past the bios boot up.The 2 nd set never made one attempt past the bios.
I did use PC5300 memory chips. What could I do to get 4 gig on this laptop gateway MT6728?

Hi retired_techiew welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

That should be PC2-5300 and DDR2 and non-ECC memory. Is it?

For maximum memory see if the Crucial System Scanner tool can give you the maximum memory capability.

Yes the memory modules were PC 5300. non ecc.
I tried some more experiments as follows:
At first I put in the (2) 2 gig memory modules and my machine failed to go to the boot disk.
When I put back the (2) 1 gig memory modules my machine worked again.
Then I took out both of the 1 gig modules and put only (1) 2 gig module in.
My machine appear to be happy again, it booted.
Then I shutdown an put a 1 gig memory module in the empty slot.
The machine again booted and now it showed me it had 3 gig.
I ran the x86 mem test for several hours. I ran at least 10 complete passes with no errors.
So I would say I am satisfied with the 3 gigs and leave it at that. Thanks

Agreed. Running properly and verifying that is better than a popup message box telling you how much you have.
Onward...good job on that btw.
