Intermittent loss of internet on certain ports
I've had this problem before, a couple years ago, and I can't remember what I did to fix it (simply because I tried about a zillion suggestions before finally finding something that worked).
What happens is that everything works normally for about a half hour or 45 minutes, then suddenly and without warning, I am unable to connect to the following services: HTTP, FTP, SMTP/POP3, IRC. (There may be others, but these are the only ones I notice this on.) However, services which use less popular ports (such as ICQ, AIM, Winamp WebRadio stations, etc.) continue to function normally. This lasts about a half hour, and then everything magically starts working again. Then the cycle repeats itself. If I reboot the computer, everything seems fine for the first half hour, then it goes back to the same ol' thing. I am unable to determine whether the problem simply stops new connections from being completed, or if it closes all current connections. It almost seems as though it only stops new ones from connecting, because I seem to remember a long download continuing through one of my Internet "brown-outs." (I'll have to test this again, I suppose.) I have 4 other computers on the network, and this machine is the ONLY one affected. Now, to make things even more interesting: I also have a web and mail server on the LAN. When I am unable to browse any other website, I am STILL able to connect to the local server and browse my own web site and send/retrieve e-mail. When I've noticed this loss of connectivity, I have tried pings and traceroutes, and they DO work, so DNS service problems does not appear to be the culprit. These are the things I have done to try to correct the problem: - Ran complete AVG virus scan (numerous times). - Ran the Trendmicro web-based virus scanner. - Ran SpyBot Search & Destroy (more than once). - Ran AdAware (more than once). - Removed all non-essential items I could find from startup (RunAlyzer/msconfig). - Tried an alternate NIC and cable to rule out hardware. - Ran "netsh winsock reset catalog" from the command line to fix any LSP issues. I am at my wits end here. What in the world am I missing? What could possibly be causing this? |

I should probably add, just for clarity's sake, that it doesn't matter which software I use. For instance, when this "web outage" occurs, I can use Mozilla (my usual) or IE... Neither one will connect to any website hosted outside my local network.
Some online games that require a user login will also not work during this time (such as The Sims Online, for example -- I don't know what port this uses for authentication), while others seem to function properly. Since posting the original, I've also checked into LMHOSTS stuff and came up empty. If I had any hair left, I'd be pulling it out by now. Can anyone shed any light at all on this? Pretty please? With sugar on top? |
