!!!urgent!!!

I have a system with two hard drives, a 40gb and an 80 gb (master/slave). My OS was fracked to pieces and the hard drive was getting errors so I replaced it with a 60gb. Now my 80gb won't read. This one has ALL my backup data on it so it is VERY important that I recover this.

I made sure that all the jumper settings are correct. I even set them both to master adn put the 80 ona separate ids interface. I then took it out of the computer and put it in an external ide to USB enclosure. Sometimes it shows up in Computer Management but its status is unreadable and only shows in the lower window of disk managment. It is not showing up in bios but my bios has two sopts where it shows drive info. THe first test shows nothing but when it lists everything right before the OS boots, it lists the drive but not it's size. What can I do?

Your new 60Gb is on the end of the Primary IDE ribbon? Jumper set to "Master" or "CS"?
The 80Gb on the middle molex (IDE plug) on the Primary IDE ribbon with jumper set to "Slave" or "CS"?

How about "Master" and "CS"
or
"CS" and "Slave".

You want to try all combos. The ribbon position is also important.

still no go. Right now I have it in an external enclosure and it's still not working. Ive tried it with the jumper in all positions. Its not making any unusual noises or anything. It sounds as if it is running just like normal. The enclosure has a light whihc is green when nothing is goin gon and red when it is reading or writing adn now it is always red.

Have you tried running check disk on it? Is the drive Fat32 or NTFS? I think that is where the problem lies...and specifically what does anythung that can see it say about it? (I have never seen Windows refer to any drive as "unreadable")

I should mention that it is showing in Disk Manager as disk 4 but it says:

Disk4
Unknown

Unreadable

It is NTFS and no I haven't run check disk. can I do that from a command prompt in Windows or do I have to use a boot disk?

If it shows in My Computer, you can right click it choose properties, tools, "error checking" and run it there. Yes you can run it in command prompt or even boot to the XP cd and run it in recovery console.

I changed ribbon cables, still nothing. I have used every combination of jumper settings. I also pulled all the drives and put only this one with it as both Master and CS and the system does not recognize it. The only way I can get it to come up at all is to use the external enclosure but htat is when it says Disk 4 unknow, unreadable. I tis not in My computer. There is no drive letter associated with it do I cannot use any recovery software (that I can find) or chkdsk. I shoul dprobably mention that I have tried this on two systems, XP Pro and Server 2003.

You can attach the 80Gb to the Primary IDE end molex
attach the cd-rom to the Secondary IDE end molex
both devices with jumper set to master.

Boot to the Windows XP CD and select to Install XP on that drive and see if that takes
or if the hard drive is recognized. If you get to the screen where it shows the drive and
partitions then see if there is a report on the file system type. FAT or NTFS.

When I try to do that , I get to the first screen where you can choose to install windows or go to recovery console. I hit enter to install windows and get this messgae:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installe don your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Everything is powered on and jumpered correctly. Bios and bios setup do not recognize the drive.

Do you know if this is a SATA drive?

What's the make and model of that drive?

Sorry Spider, Artstacey was quoting me and asking a question of something I said. I think the drive is corrupted and needs to run some form of error checking is all. She wants to read the drive, nit install Windows to it.
