Windows Update Error 80070005 Unable To Install
Hello CTH,
I have Windows 8.1, and I changed my Windows Update settings a while back when I decided a did not want the Windows 10 updates being pushed on me. I haven't installed any in a while (this is probably not advisable, I'm aware), so I wanted to get around to installing the updates I've let sit. I've now encountered the "Access Denied" error, 80070005, which allowed me to download one of the updates, but will not let me install it. I did some Googling and found an item called the "SubInACL" tool, and I followed the instructions via MS's website / other websites to copy and paste some commands into Notepad, ran as Administrator, etc. The file did some stuff for about ten minutes, and then I think it stopped. Tried to install update file again, and it did not work. Is there a good workaround here? Not sure where to go next if that tool doesn't work. Thanks! |

Well obviously no one replied, so lets see if we can solve this one:
Obviously you must of found this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/968003 If you used this page to cut and paste and run the cmd file, did you reboot then try and install?? |

Hi Murf, thanks for the response.
So, although I did not immediately reboot and retry the install at the time, I do shut down my machine nightly, and I had not tried it since. I attempted to install one of the updates tonight, and it failed once again. I'm running the command again, and honestly, when I saw it run before, I was not convinced it even worked correctly, thanks to my less-than-stellar technical knowledge. Here's a screencap of what I was seeing when I ran it. That "failed" number just goes higher, and higher. I'm not sure what that means. I do know that the command appeared to run through the DOS prompt, and then this screen, two full times before I think it stopped. I'm not sure it worked, but it wasn't doing the above operation a third time, so I assumed it concluded. Any further advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Did you scan for malware?
Run Windows Defender to scan for malware. If malware is preventing Defender from functioning correctly, download and run Microsoft Safety Scanner. To do this, follow these steps:

Attempted to run Windows Defender, but received an error and it did not launch. A Google search suggested my use of Avast antivirus might prevent that. So I ran a malware scan with Avast, and came up with nothing.

Go to Search and type appwiz.cpl and press enter In Programs and Features find Microsoft Office, Right click it and choose Uninstall or Change. A dialog box will come up and ask if you want to Add Features to Microsoft Office, Repair or Remove. Choose Repair. When done restart. And try updating again.

What does Office have to do with updates? Office even if corrupt, would not prevent other updates. Yes it would prevent Office updates??????
Try the troubleshooter: (Towards the bottom of the page) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...windows-update |

I don't know what Office would have to do with anything, but I did do the repair option anyway, because I figured it couldn't hurt.
I had 50 "Important" updates pending, and I'm now down to I think 7 or so, with 15 "optional" updates. A couple of them didn't want to work earlier, but maybe they will later. I'm probably not going to run those tonight. One of them, interestingly enough, was a Windows Defender update, that's what sparked the code that spawned this topic. Not sure what that means per se, but there you go. All this because I didn't want Windows 10 imposed upon me. >:| |
