1) Not necessary.

2)
a) Yes.
b) Windows should take care of it automatically.

If you intend on using the wireless keyboard and mouse with a Desktop computer, yes, you would need to plug the transceivers into the Desktop computer so that it could now communicate with the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Thank you, it's just that the laptop is now upstairs and the desktop downstairs since moving. I will have to move the transceivers between the two devices daily and wanted to be sure it was necessary. Thank you for your help and patience.

Yes, in order for the wireless keyboard and mouse to communicate with any computer would require that their respective transceivers be plugged into that particular computer.

If you have the transceiver plugged into the PC and another one into the Laptop, its just a matter of moving the keyboard and mouse from one to the other. he keyboard can be probably 10-15 ft away and still pick up the signal. Just leave the respective transceivers plugged in all the time.

She didn't have any transceivers, so as instructed by Logitech she ordered two, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse.

She has two computers, a Laptop and Desktop.

If one transceiver will work with both the keyboard and mouse, then she could leave one transceiver plugged into the Laptop and the other into the Desktop. If not, she'll have to move both transceivers from one computer to the other.
