Most cost effective way to get W8?

Hello.

I'm thinking of purchasing this W8 upgrade disk:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...vglnk-c1109-20

...then using it to do a clean install (not an upgrade) on my Vista system. Two questions:

1) Is that the cheapest way to go about it?

2) Does anyone see any issues by using methods to clean install with an upgrade disk?

it will require an activated and genuine copy of an operating system installed on your system before it will allow you to install. So do not format the drive before starting the install.

As far as cheaper, who knows.

Thanks for that Renegade.

I've decided to just get it today at Best Buy. It's $40.00 more, but no online ordering or hidden costs that often seem to creep up.

For a clean install, I'll select "Nothing" under the heading, "What to keep". That should result in a clean install.

if you have a local walmart, they may sell it a few dollars cheaper than best buy.

You are right, select nothing and you will get something...exactly what you wanted.

one other free solution, you can download 8.1 preview from microsoft.

Windows 8 is now installed on my old Vista system. I used the method I posted, and total time from start to finish was 19 minutes. All drivers were installed including my printer.

8.1 Beta installed with no issue.

The start button is there, but as suspected, left clicking on it goes to the Metro Start Screen. Right clicking on the Start button goes to the pre 8.1 Start menu, but now has the shutdown option.

Note: Very few people even know about the menu that appears when you right click on the bottom left corner.

Other main options:

- Ability to disable Charms.
- Ability to boot to Desktop mode.
- More extensive abilities to organize and re-size tiles in Metro mode.

So I'm happy to report that there's no need for Classic Shell or Start8 with 8.1.

strongly disagree with not needing classic shell. IMO, win8.1 start button is no better than not having one. I do not like being taken from the desktop to metro when clicking on the start buton. I want the original start button where when I click on it, it will open the menu on the bottom left corner where I can for example, continue to view what I am watching on screen. in addition wait until you start getting bing ads when you do a simple computer search or look at the weather and other apps.

anyway glad you got things going to your satisfaction

I use desktop mode. I would only use metro on a pad or phone.

Don't left click on the start button, right click on it.

Also, one of the options when you right click on the start button is "File Explorer". That's where you can access Network, the drives, Pictures, Documents, Music, etc, in one screen.
