Hmm, try rebuilding the BCD again. See here and here.

FixBoot is another to retry if rebuilding the BCD didnt help.

If you still have problems, there may be an issue with the hard drive itself.

To check the drive, boot from the DVD again and open a command prompt. See here for more help.

After the prompt, type:

chkdsk c: /r

after the prompt and hit Enter. It will take a while to run but keep an eye on it. Did it find any errors on the volume and are you still unable to boot into Windows?

Thought I'd try chkdsk first, its got to stage 5 and is on 10% 415000 of 75516584 free clusters processed, nothings happening now apart fron the hard drive light is on.
Is this frozen or is it going to take a long time?

1st Edit!

After posting it went to 420000 so am I in for a long long wait?

2nd Edit!!

Looks like I'm AM in for a long wait - the numbers are moving and its gone to 11%

3rd Edit - Finally Finished
it added 4230 bad clusters
corrected errors in master file tables (MFT) bitmap attribute
corrected errors in volume bitmap
Windows has made corrections to the file system - then lists the following:

302328831 Kb total disk space
172880 Kb in 252 files
5376 Kb in 8709 indexes
16920 Kb in bad sectors
84235 Kb in use by the system
65536 Kb occupied by the log file
302049420 Kb available on disk

4096 bytes in each allocation unit
75582207 total allocation units on disk
75512355 allocation units available on disk
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.

In Stage 1 of 5 it stated this:
0 large file records processed
0 bad file records processed
0 EA records processed
0 reparse records process

The chkdsk report shows that the hard drive is failing andypat and needs to be replaced. If your friend didn't make the Recovery Disks when he first got the laptop, you will also need to contact Acer and request Recovery Disks. There will be a small charge.

Yeah it may have still been accessing files to load and crashing during the boot sequence can be a symptom.

Chkdsk shows that it has 16920 Kb in bad sectors and it added 4230 bad clusters during the recent check.

I am not a hardware expert though andypat so by all means ask the guys in our Hardware Forum. They may suggest another utility that you can run to double check.
