Ok, lets see if we can delete the file/folder and then see if that makes any difference. Also, if we are lucky, the exercise might reveal some more information regarding what the problem is. We will use the same method I posted for backing up data. See below in case you have forgotten.

Boot using the DVD again and open a command prompt (print this page for more help) and type:

C:\windows\notepad.exe

Notepad will open. Go to File Open and where it says Look In, if Vista is on your C drive, change the directory to OS (C: ) or to whatever drive letter Vista is installed on. Next, change the Files of Type to "All Files". You will now be able to navigate through your drive. Rightclick on the file/folder you want to get rid of and choose Delete.

Reboot afterwards and try running chkdsk again.

OK. I was able to delete the file. However, chkdsk still does not run. Same error.

Within windows, I right click the C drive and click properties. Under the "tools" tab, I under "error checking" I click "check disk" and it schedules a chkdsk for the next startup. Is this a bad way of doing it?

Not at all. I imagine most people use that method. Have you tried running it from Safe Mode? If not do so please and let me know if it made any difference.

I would also like to see a registry key please. Click on Start and type cmd in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the following command in the Code box after the prompt > and hit Enter:

Code:
reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" > C:\look.txt & start notepad c:\look.txt
Your registry will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

For some reason I am not able to get into safe mode. I have tried restarting and tapping f8 but it never gives me the option to boot into safe mode. I tried holding down the power button till it turns off then restarting. It gives me the option then but it hangs up and never goes into safe mode. Any ideas?

You will have two files in your C:\windows\winsxs folder that I would like to see please.

Look for cleanup.xml and poqexec.log. Copy them to your Desktop, zip them up (this is important) and email them to me (include a link to this thread) and title your email "Requested Files". My address is anniefriday@xtra.co.nz. I will post back when I have checked them out.

Jazz I remember when you had to reinstall Vista, you said you had your important files on another partition or drive. Is it just data that you were talking about or do you have some programs installed on another partition too?

Email sent.

That was on the other computer I have, the tower. On this computer, my laptop, I have everything on the main drive (about 60 gigs). There is a recovery partition for the reinstall.

Unless updates have just been installed, it looks like Windows is trying to delete some files at boot time and it's not happening for whatever reason. This may or may not have something to do with your problems but I'll sort out those registry entries and see where we stand.

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the below commands after the prompt> and hit enter after each line.

Code:
Reg Delete "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" /v SetupExecute /f
Reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" /v SetupExecute /t REG_MULTI_SZ /f
Reboot and see if you can run chkdsk now.

Ok open an elevated command prompt again and run the below commands (hit Enter after each line).

Code:
reg delete "HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager" /v bootexecute /f
reg add "HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager" /v bootexecute /t reg_multi_sz /d "autocheck autochk *" /f
Reboot and see if you can schedule and run chkdsk now. If not, run the below command again please and post the new contents of look.txt.

Code:
reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" > C:\look.txt & start notepad c:\look.txt

Sorry Jazz but I'm out of ideas. Chkdsk is set to run and those registry settings are correct so the problem is elsewhere.

So far we have identified at least three issues. Chkdsk wont run within Windows, you cannot run System Restore and you cant boot into Safe Mode. The System File Checker gave your files a clean bill of health, a Startup Repair didnt help and a cleanboot didnt make any difference so really that only leaves problems in the registry. I am firmly opposed to using registry cleaners during routine maintenance and strongly suspect CCleaner is the culprit on this occasion.
