strange problems - moved by Jintan

hi

my problem is mainly manifesting when I try to click on a link to a website, when I am redirected to a different website or IP address from what i have clicked on. It doesn't do it all the time though and if I copy and paste the address of the link into my address bar then it usually works. It also stops from doing certain things, like registering for this highly recommended website (which i had to do on another pc).

Here is my HijackThis log.

I would be very grateful for any help I can get.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Welcome to CTH Bridette,

Yes, a redirect hijacker service is running there. Let's make some changes to aid the situation there, then get more details to work from to start some repairs. The log shows the Calculator running when it was created - where you using the Calculator before you ran the HijackThis scan (malware sometimes "hooks" that legit process)?

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download and run Process Explorer from here. Click on View and check "Show processes from all users", "show fractional CPU" and "Show unnamed handles".

Next, close all open programs, especially Internet Explorer and any other open browsers.

If you yourself were not running the Calculator before, in the upper panel right click calc.exe , and select "Suspend". Not "Kill Process" or the other options you might see.

Then right click tinyproxy.exe, and select "Suspend".

Then right click all instances of IEXPLORE.EXE showing, and select "Kill Process".

Click the minus symbol for now to minimize Process Explorer.

-------------------

Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop, then click on the RSIT.exe to start the scan.

If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.

Firstly, thanks very much for your help.

I was using the calculator before I ran HijackThis and it didn't appear in the Process Explorer today. I was unable to suspend the tinyproxy.exe process, it told me "Unable to suspend the process: Access denied" even though I am the sole owner/user of the laptop.

The logs are in seperate posts as it seems I can't post properly from the laptop!

Let's make another change then verify an important file's status before going with more repairs.

Go to Start > Run and type

cmd

and OK. At the prompt type (or copy\paste) the below commands and hit "Enter" after.

sc config "DHCP Client (Dhcp) " start= disabled

Type Exit to close.

--------------------

Go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt, then press Enter:

dir /s /a "c:\*tcpip*.*" > c:\find.txt && notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread please.

I suspect this is not a great result. When I go to Start>Run>CMD and type in the command you suggested I get:
"[SC] OpenService FAILED 5:
Access is denied"
Likewise when I type in the string to run the scan I get "Access is denied"

Eh, a bit of a rocky start. Let's change that now.

Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop.

=============================

Reboot into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode).

In Safe Mode, click the C:\SDFix.exe folder and allow it to extract to it's own folder (C:\SDFix). Navigate to that folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

Next type Y to begin the script. Once the fix has run it will prompt you to restart your computer. Press any key to restart at this time. Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.

When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Then open the C:\SDFix folder and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back here.

Hmm. I can't quite seem to manage that either :-(

The SDFix.exe seems to download successfully. I rebooted into Safe mode. When I click it doesn't give me an option to extract files or anything so I opted to run the file. It started to extract the files and produced the following error:

Some installation files are corrupt.
Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation

Along with the following error log:

With the bottom 2 lines appearing in red. It advised me to download the file again. I rebooted into normal mode and downloaded the program again. Rebooting into Safe mode and trying to run the program again I get the error:
C:\Users\Brid\Desktop\SDFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

After rebooting into normal mode again I tried to run the program again and got the same message.

Sorry I'm not making this one easy for you!

Just need to selectively knock on a door or two before one opens. Please be very sure Norton, SpywareDoctor and any other security softwares are completely disabled though.

Download The Avenger by Swandog from here.

Then unzip that, so it will create an avenger folder and an avenger.exe file.

Rename the avenger.exe file avvy.scr

Then click avvy.scr to start Avenger.

Okay the warning. When the Avenger display opens copy/paste the following text inside the Code box into the Avenger box titled "Input script here:". Then click the Execute button to run the repair, click Yes, then allow Avenger to reboot your system.

Code:
Begin copying here:
Drivers to delete:
"DHCP Client (Dhcp) "
DHCP Client (Dhcp)
Folders to delete:
C:\Program Files\tinyproxy
Your system may reboot twice to complete the repairs. After the reboot a text will open - copy/paste those contents back here please. The log can also be found at C:\avenger.txt.

------------------------

Then Go here and download reglooks.exe to your Desktop. Doubleclick on it to run it and when it has finished scanning, a log named result.txt will open in Notepad. Copy the log and post it in this thread.

Post that and the C:\avenger.txt log please.

Ok, still no Christmas joy to report, I'm afraid.

I have completely disabled Spyware Doctor and I have disabled internet explorer Protected Mode. I think Norton is disabled. It came preloaded on my PC and I never wanted it and never configured it or paid for it. I've even tried to remove it from my pc, resulting in an annoying error message every time I boot up. Despite all this there is still a Norton icon showing in my system tray (the yellow circle, but with a red circle containing a white cross in the lower right quarter of the Norton symbol) that I cannot seem to get rid of. I have really no idea if it's actively doing anything.

When I download Avenger it looks ok and it creates a .zip file 3.66k in size. When I try to extract the files I am told the folder is empty:

Cannot Complete the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard
The compressed (zipped) folder is empty.
Before you can extract files, you must copy files to this compressed (zipped) folder.
To close this wizard, click Finish.

If I just double click the folder rather than extract I get:

Compressed (zipped) Folders Error
Windows cannot open the folder.
The Compressed (zipped) Folder 'C:\Users\Brid\Desktop\avenger.zip' is invalid.

I thought I'd have a bash at reglooks anyway. Download seems fine but when I doubleclick on it I get:

C:\Users\Brid\Desktop\reglooks.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Let's see if the malware is corrupting our tool files by the names used.

Download Lop S&D from here to your desktop, then click the downloaded LopSD.exe to open the scan window. Select "e" for English, then from the next menu select 1 to do a "Search". DO NOT make any other selections from that menu unless instructed please.

When the scan completes notepad will open with the scan results. Copy/paste those back here for review please (the log is also stored as C:\LopR.txt).
