Well we are very limited in what we can do without the CD. Let's hope that the problem is just a corrupted template.

Close Word and make sure that you can view hidden files and folders, uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and navigate to c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Temp lates. Find Normal.dotm and rightclick on it and rename it to normal.old.

Open Word now. Did this help?

While pundit above is walking this poor student thru steps I do not understand, how do we feel about her getting something like abiword in the interim....maybe waiting for someone to send the Office CD?????

Jill, a corrupted template is responsible for 90% of the problems with Word and I have posted the official fix.

As I said, clearly you are pundit and what you are doing is above my head, forget I, Jill....am learning! I only posted an interim thought re an open source word processing app....just in case.

Sorry if any part of that was not clear.

Hmmm. Click on Start and type cmd in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the following command in the Code box after the prompt > and hit Enter.

dir /s /a "c:\normal*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information.
