Make sure that Servicing Stack KB2919442 is installed. It is a prerequisite for Windows 8.1 Update. It should therefore first be installed on your system before your attempt to install Windows 8.1 Update or KB2919355. Go get itHere if your computer does not have it.
In Programs and Features, left pane click on Show Updates, see if you see it. |

I do not have update KB2919442 - Sorry, but I am confused about what to do with conflicting information. I followed the link for the KB2919442 update and it says that update KB2969339 replaces KB2919442 and then later says: To apply this update, you must be running Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. And once installed it can not be uninstalled.
Which leaves me in limbo -- how can I be running in 8.1 when I can't get to 8.1? |

Because it said kb2919442 had to be installed before attempting to install kb2919355 so I downloaded it and when it tried to install it I got this message:
WINDOWS UPDATE INSTALLER The update is not applicable to your computer. The PC is less than a year and a half old and came with 8.0 and I had 8.1 installed for several months before the OS crashed and I lost everything. |
