What does a system restore NOT do?
I was just wondering about this because I just had a power surge earlier tonight (due to bad storm and lightning) and my computer shut down completely. I got it up and working ok but some things were acting a bit weird. I remember this happening before so I did a system restore and that fixed things. So I did one and so far, everything's good. But I was just wondering... what does a system restore NOT do? I know it can restore your system files, registry settings and not mess with your document so I assume doing a system restore helps fix problems caused by a power surge. Should I do a restore each time I have a power surge or outage after a bad stormy night (if my PC is still on?) or would that not always help?

System Restore simply restores the data on the Hard Drive back to a KNOWN good point.
Example: 7/29/2016 - Computer suffers a crash, and files are damaged. Doing a System Restore of a earlier Restore Point - 7/25/2016. Restores the computer back to that point. But any updates, or programs added after the Restore Point - 7/25/2016, will need to be reinstalled. Note: It is a good idea to clear out the old Restore Points once in awhile. They can eat up hard drive space, and effect the machines speed, if you got a lot of them. Quote:
Only if, like you just did, have a problem. Though if you have power issues. Consider getting a UPS, with surge protection. This will protect your computer, and give you 10 to 20 minutes backup time to finish what your doing, and do a controlled shut down. For one, it goes back to the date of the restore point. That may or not be a "KNOWN good point". It also will not modify any of your personal data files. So if you have a Word document you edited today and use System Restore to go back to a couple days ago, your Word document will not be touched. System Restore will not remove or clean malware. It will restore some deleted files but not most of your personal files. System Restore is primarily to undo changes you (or the OS) intentionally made to your system. Like changes made with Windows Update or a driver update. Quote:

Well what I also really wanted to know... when my PC suffered from a surge or a problem, sometimes the videos I have on my hard drive won't play. I have windows media player as my default player. When I want to play it on another player such as VLC player, I would just right click and click "open with" but the thing is, it does nothing when I right click. I just get the rolling wheel on the cursor like the PC is waiting to do something but it takes so long before it finally responds. It happened after a power surge and it also happened when I had to unplug and replug the router (I have wireless networking). So I had to do a system restore to fix this problem. Do you know why this is happening and what I can do besides a system restore?

BTW, I keep my computer, both LCD monitors, router and modem on my UPS.
You might try running System File Checker (sfc /scanow) – from elevated command prompt. |

If you get a problem with videos after a crash its likely not the videos themselves but some driver or program that is associated with videos. When you have a power outage while the PC is basically just sitting there its likely you will recover from it. The problem comes if you have things open and or running at the time. As mentioned, running a system scan can find system files that became corrupted or damaged but not applications like VLC or Media Player, though they do rely somewhat on system resources.
If your on Win7, click Start > All Programs > Accessories. Then right click the "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator" then type SFC /scannow (note the space between C and /) after the prompt and hit enter. If System Restore doesn't help you can try reinstalling the same version of Video Programs right over the old ones to see if that fixes it. Usually versions can be found under Help and or About in the applications menu. Or uninstall and install a new version. |

When you restore the system all the system files, registry and programs are rolled back to the restore point After restoring the system, you need to reinstall the effected programs again.
