boot notification about Group Policy Client

About two weeks ago my Windows 8.1 laptop started issuing a notification when I first started it up in the morning. The notification is as follows:

"Failed to connect to Windows service

Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client service. This problem prevents standard users from signing in. As an administrative user, you can review the system event log for details about why the service didn't respond."

I just shut off the notification and it goes away until the next hard boot-up. The operation of the computer does not seem to be affected, but I sure would like it to stop doing this.

Oh, great wizards, can you help?

Hi Murf!

Over the past six or seven months this problem keeps coming back. Typing "netsh winsock reset" as the administrator will fix the problem temporarily - anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Sometimes the warning comes back at the very next morning boot-up, maybe a few days and start-ups later, and once (last August) it was warning-free for an entire month.

Is there any way I can permanently rid myself of this poltergeist?

  • open your control panel.
  • type in device into the search bar
  • click on device manager
  • click the arrow next to network adapters.
  • right click on each one of the items that pop up in the drop down menu and click properties.
  • find which of your devices have power management and UN-CHECK ANY BOXES!!!
  • restart your computer.

Two network adapters (an Ethernet adapter and a Wireless adapter) were listed, both with all the power management boxes checked. I un-checked all of them, clicked "OK" and restarted my machine. So far, so good!

Thank you, again!
