Locks up

On the pc that I use for backups just recently began to lock up. I power it up and it comes up fine. But within about 5 minutes it locks up. The mouse wont work or the keyboard. I have to power it off with the button. There are no beeps or errors. I haven't installed any new software for months. When I boot it up I can open maybe 3 files before it just freezes up again. Any idea's as to what the problem may be.

e-machine W3609
2 gig ram
WD HD

thank you

does the computer feel hotter than normal around the power supple. do the fans sound like they are coming on properly. open the case and make sure it is dust free. while the cover is off, run as normal and see if it freezes.

If it locks up within 5 minutes the it probably is not a heat issue. Get into BIOS and set it to defaults. Does it have a video card or using on-board video?

Maybe remove a stick of RAM, then check. Then if no go, swap out the sticks (assuming you have two sticks of RAM - if not, you get the idea).
