Help with Vista crashes

Hello,
First I had some problems with itunes which brought me to this website. Those have since been fixed, but more have came up. I have learned alot, but am still not very good with computers or their terms. The meat and bones of my problems can be found here http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...8&goto=newpost. i am just about to uninstall McAfee and reinstall- but am also a little worried that is half the problem- I really have no idea what I am doing. I would take all the help that I can get. Thank you so much for any that you could give me

Hi tamiseib, I would like to see the log generated when you ran chkdsk.

You can view the log in Event Viewer. Hit the Windows key plus r and type:

eventvwr.msc

and ok. Click on Windows Logs > Application and find all the Events for the date you ran Chkdsk and look under Source for wininit. Doubleclick to open and you should see the results. Click on copy and paste the information here.

I also see that a dirty bit was set so I want to check the current status of your drive. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this type cmd in the Start Search box and it will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the below command after the prompt > and hit Enter.

fsutil dirty query c: > c:\dirty.txt & start notepad c:\dirty.txt

Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

Thank you so much for helping me. Please keep in mind I am not very computer literate and my computer is very slow and probably moments away from crashing. That being said . . I started to do the event log view thing and remembered that I had already posted that information on the spykiller website for the other cybertech guy. Can you see that from the last forum- where it's at I mean. He came across like I was a little crazy, but when I get to that screen there are literally 42,234 events that start and try to load. If I try to copy and paste them or anything my computer is not gonna like it. In fact, even when I clicked on it the blue circle started and I was afraid it was going to crash, so I clicked the red "x" and just got out of there. I still have those files from "apps" and "systems" zipped on my desktop- if there is anything you would like me to do with them. Although I am not even sure I did that right. Like I said- I really don't know what I am doing here- but am willing and perfectly capable of learning, if you will teach me.

The second request was relatively easy, but offers little results. The notepad message was and I quote Volume - c: is NOT Dirty

So, that is all the information I have for now. What can I do next?

Well the good news is that chkdsk didnt find any bad sectors on your hard drive and it has fixed the problem that it reported initially.

To save me reading the information in link you posted everytime I reply to your topic, can you please bring me up to date with what problems still exist after running chkdsk and whether or not you have uninstalled McAfee.

Well I guess in my elementary terms it is that I keep getting the blue screen of death and I feel as though my computer is about to completely crash at any moment. The more in depth I get with these steps it seems like there are errors and failures all over the place. The error log goes back to April, 44k errors and failures since then seems like a huge amount to me (again that isn't saying much).

I have uninstalled McAfee. Should I reinstall?

Should I just restore to factory settings? I am worried that one of these times it is going to shut off and it's not going to turn back on.

Thank you so much for your help.

P.S. I am going to computer -local disk- right clicking- going to properties-then checking volume for errors. Everytime I get the blue screen. (about once a day) Is this the best thing? and is it what you mean by "chkdsk"?

No, not until we get the issue sorted out.

No you shouldnt have to do this. The problem may be hardware related and if this proves to be the most likely case, I cant help you. You will need to post a new topic in our Hardware Forum.

It's also possible that you may have a corrupted profile and that is quite easily checked. I want you to create a new user account with Admin permissions (see here for help to do this) and then shut down yor computer for a few minutes. Restart it and logon to the new Account and use it for a day or two. Are you still getting blue screens? If so, please copy exactly what you see and post it here please. It will be very helpful to have the error message.

Well the computer has officially crashed. When I turn it on I get the black screen that says start normally or launch repair. I have tried both. Repair mode does a little of nothing and shuts down nothing and shuts off anyway. Starting up normally flickers blue and comes back to the black screen. I am able to get to a system recovery place with the repair mode, but it takes me to a place where I can choose from Administrator-guest-Tam as a user ID and then a password field. I am not a complicated person- and don't have passwords on the computer anyway- but tried all three with the one password it could have been and it says that my account is disabled. Wish we would have came up with that idea before. I am not sure tht I am willing to put that much money into this laptop. I paid 600.00 bucks maybe three years ago. It is an HP has a widescree- and it makes me pretty mad, but I have already wasted so much time. Is it fixable? do you have any idea how much? and what kind of info do you need to let me know if you think it is worth it? I just need an educated opinion. Please - Thank you, again for all of your help and all of your time. Tami

If you have no password, did you try leaving the password field blank and hitting Enter? If not, this is Hewlett Packard's version of the Recovery Environment and you will have to refer to your documentation or contact them for further help. I always use the Vista DVD and have no experience with HP's cut down version.

Wish we would have came up with that idea before.
I dont understand why you would say this. Firstly, we were able to work in Windows so there was no need to resort to the Recovery Environment. Secondly, we still havent established whether the problem is hardware related or software related and if the former, repairing your OS isnt going to be much help. I am leaning toward a hardware issue though.

Is it fixable? do you have any idea how much? and what kind of info do you need to let me know if you think it is worth it? I just need an educated opinion. Please
Most problems can be fixed but as I said, I dont know whether your issue is hardware or software related and I have no idea what it might cost to fix. You have to remember that I have only seen the results of when you ran chkdsk and it's impossible to diagnose a problem from that meagre information. I am also sitting at a computer thousands of miles away. We dont even use the same currency as you and charges are very different here. Your best bet is to take it into a repair shop and ask for a quote before they do any work on it. I am sorry Tami, but that the best advice I can offer.
