Unhappy tired of being stupid please help

I bought a tower from a friend. The computer is clean but he used wipe drive to erase all his private information. I am trying to set this computer up for the kids to use on the internet (supervised) and do homework. I finally got windows 98 installed and FINALLY got it to connect to the internet it kept saying no modem installed. Now my problem is the screen looks fine on the computer but when i connect to the internet the display shows the color in dots and x's and it distorts the words until you can barely read it. I tried display settings to change the screen resolution but my monitor only shows 16 colors and the lowest resolution and i can't change it. I tried scanning for driver updates but it always comes back with nothing. The computer was working fine when he had it I saw it. I know this is vague but my head hurts from messing with this i am about ready to pitch it in the trash. You are all so computer smart please help a dummy.
Thanks

You need to install the drivers for your video card.

But you don't know what video card you have?

So run This Program and it will tell you. Then post it here and we can help find the right drivers for you.

Click Here to open an ATI page. ATI's site won't allow linking directly to the download page so here are the steps:

On that first ATI page, click on "Windows 98 Drivers and Software."

On the next page, click on "Rage."

On the next page, under the heading Rage XL click on the word "more.."

On the next page, click on "Windows 98 Display Driver version 4.12.2647"

On the next page, click on "WME-RAGEXL-4-13-1-2655.EXE" to start the download.

When it asks what you want to do with the file, click on "Save" and remember where you saved it.

Once you've got it saved, just double click it to run it.
