Windows XP Service Pack 2

I've heard a lot of bad things about the Windows SP2. I just downloaded and installed it about two days ago. Already I've noticed friends can't send me files through instant messaging programs like msn and YIM, even after disabling my firewall. I think I don't want it anymore. Is there anyway to get rid of it without reformatting my hard drive? I've already tried system restore and it doesn't work.

In the Control Panel > Windows Firewall > I set it to have Windows Firewall not block incoming network connections for programs such as MSN and YIM. I was worried to find I couldn't receive files via them.

I already have Norton System Works 2003, and a firewall that comes with my wireless network. I don't think I need the service pack, but am still not very sure.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of not having the service pack, even if I have a firewall and NSW 2003?
