What happens if you reboot with the restore CD in the drive? What happens if you insert the CD while the colputer is running? Exact error messages if any.

Go to www.ibm.com and download the correct drivers for that model. Install them and you may get by OK. Let us know. Did you load Win 98 or 98SE? 98SE is certainly a better choice if available and...

Your hard drive may have already given it up! The most likely cause of the error message you described is just that. You first need to see if the hard drive is recognized correctly in the BIOS/Setup....

A fan and some thermal paste is cheaper than a laptop.

I think you made a bad situation worse. Take that drive out and slave it to a working XP computer and backup the data files to CDR, etc. Then format your hard drive in your machine and reinstall...

If you are getting to the boot menu then something is working on the hard drive. If you can get in on safe mode or anything get those files backed up first.

You need to press F10 several times...
