What does it mean if the WAN light on a router stays off even when it is properly connected up to the modem with a working cable? Is this indicative of a broken router?

its all very standard these days. bad routers don't disconnect the internet, faulty settings or out of date firmware on the router would. Wired/wireless depends on what kind of ethernet card is on...
