DVD freezes OS when cd or dvd inserted
 

I have been having trouble with my DVD player. I have a Compaq DVD-113R (made by Panasonic). I have recently downloaded and reinstalled the Compaq player to try to fix this. Whenever I load a CD (or DVD), the player starts a low whistle. If I try to access the CD using the DVD player or winamp or just 'My Computer', I get a blue screen. I checked all drivers using diagnostics and system just to see all enabled with no conflicts. Sometimes, before the Blue Screen, my video display shrinks down, freezes, still with the ability to move the mouse but no activation of any other programs possible. The Blue screen soon follows. Compaq has been no help. Any one out there have any notion. Check my profile for all pertinent system info. Thanks in advance for any help.

You have Win ME operating sytem on this pc?

Did you just get this dvd player?

no, originally had win98 on machine, but always had some boot problems that fixed with ME. The problem was dvd & video issues with ME. ME has been on box for over a year. The dvd player did work at one time. I did have an issue getting to the internet & Explorer would cause My Computer to not start with problem Unknown. I removed new.net from the machine which my son had put on sometime before. That cleared up the Explorer and IE issues. Compaq DVD-113R (internal, Panasonic mfg) was orginal with the Presario 5600s when purchased - about 4 years ago.

Compaq offers this firmware upgrade for the 113r dvd.

See if this helps.
I haven't heard that one yet. Can I ask where this claim came from?

It's actually a very nice O/S (Operating System). It has
many features that Windows98SE doesn't have. If your experiencing
some difficulties these are most likely unique to your computer only.

As long as the O/S is updated
registry optimized
drivers updated
power supply adequate, battery healthy (charged)
then WindowsME is a very stable O/S.

I wanted to clear that up, we don't want to strike fears in the members
here that run WindowsME.

Just an additional thought. Did you check to see if this dvd player was compatable with ME? Should be but just checking since it was purchased 4 years ago.

Spider, Thanks for the link to download sp from COMPAQ. Unfortunatley after down load, I ran the sp15568 but recieved an error stating that it was "Unable to to find QRST5.exe".

Isn't just like COMPAQ to put out an sp that doesn't find its own parts.
