Windows 10 antivirus

I am running Avast Antivirus on windows 10 but I was told that windows 10 comes with window defender and that is the only antivirus that is needed for windows 10.
Please advise if that is correct.

you can run what you want - whatever makes you feel secure. I run windows defender because it is already installed and you can forget it. it updates and scans automatically. you should also run a companion utility for spyware such as the free version of malwarebytes. just remember there is not one antivirus that is 100 percent effective. as far as your specific question if windows defender is all you need for an antivirus. I say yes, but others have their own favorite antivirus so they will say no :-)

Windows Defender in Windows 10 has a little better detection rate than the earlier versions of Windows. As long as you are not click happy, and download apps from well known reputable sites, and be careful on the sites you visit you should be good to go with Windows Defender. I am also running Windows Defender in Windows 10 along with VoodooShield, Malwarebytes Anti Exploit premium. VoodooShield is also pro but free version is also good same as Malwarebytes Anti Exploit.

Windows Defender should be fine. They have improved the protection of Windows Defender in Windows 10. As long as your not click happy and be careful what you download, careful of the sites you visit you should be fine. I'm running Windows Defender in Windows 10 also, along with VoodooSheild premium, and Malwarebytes Anti Exploit premium. The free versions of these extra apps are quite good if you care to add them to your security bundle.

I've been running Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) in Windows 7, and the updated MSE renamed to Windows Defender in Windows 8.x and Windows 10 since Windows 7 came out in 2009 without any problems and I recommend it with no reservations.

However, regardless the anti-malware solution you use, you should have a supplemental scanner on hand for verification just to ensure you (the user and ALWAYS weakest link in security) or your primary scanner did not let something slip by. And for that, I recommend Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM).

And just FTR, in the 6 years since using MSE/WD, MBAM has not found that anything did slip by.

Just keep Windows and your security updated, use a decent firewall (I use and recommend Windows Firewall), don't partake in risky behavior like illegal filesharing via P2P sites and through Torrents, don't visit illegal pornography and gambling sites, and as Russ noted, don't be "click happy" on unsolicited downloads, attachments, and links (the things you must do - or not do- regardless your security) and you will be fine.

I've seen nothing wrong with the default Windows Defender in Windows 10
