Hovering cursor over file-missing file info
I have XP os, and when I hover my mouse over a file, I get some basic info about the file. For example;
If I have a jpg on my desktop and hover my mouse curser over it, I’ll get some basic info such as file type and size. Now, I loaded Microsoft’s raw viewer on my pc, and now no matter what the file is, the previous functionality is gone. I'm not even sure if this was the cause of this issue. How do I restore the ability to display basic file information when hovering my mouse cursor over the file? Thanks, Greg.. |
Welcome to CTH Greg. Open My Computer and go to Tools > Folder Options and then select the View tab. In the Advanced Settings list, check the boxes for "Display File Size Information In Folder Tips" and "Show Pop-Up Description For Folder And Desktop Items". Click OK.

Hovering cursor over file for info in xp
Greetings and Happy New Year AnnMarie,
Thank you for responding to my issue so promptly. Unfortunately your suggestions didn't work as I already have those options selected. Feel free to respond if you have any other suggestions. best regards, greg. |
AnnMarie,
I unchecked those preferences and then re-check,(enabled) them. Now it does work except for .gif's and .jpeg's. Why don't those work? Thanks so much for all your help. Regards, greg. |
Darn, my webhost is down again. :disgust:
Sorry Greg, you will have to compose this regedit yourself. Copy and paste the information inside the code box to Notepad, click on Save As. Save the file as Fix.reg and make sure that All Files is selected in Save As Type. Doubleclick to run and reboot. Code:
REGEDIT4 |

AnnMarie,
you are so kind to keep trying to remedy my issue. I followed you suggestion exactly as you instructed. I successfully updated my registry. Unfortunately still no change. Please let me know if you have anything else up your sleeve. I appreciate all your expertise and valuable time. Regards, Greg. |
Hi Greg, go to Start > Run, and paste the following into the box, then click OK:
Code:
regedit /e C:\run.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image" Open the Run.txt file, copy the contents and post the information here. |

Hmmm, the ToolTips reg entry is there. What program are these files associated with (open My Computer and go to Tools > Folders Options > File Types)? Click on Gif and Jpeg. What does it say for each under "Opens With"?
|
I'll use either Microsoft's new RAW Image Viewer or Microsoft's Picture and Fax viewer. However I can change my file association on the fly if you want me to. I have many excellent imaging softwares on my PC. My main imaging program is Adobe PS CS2.

Hovering cursor over file for info/meta-file information in xp
Well I'll be darn!!!! Guess what? If I change my file association to say to Photoshop or Microsoft's Office Picture Manager, then it works!! If I associate the imaging file back to either Microsoft's RAW Image Viewer or Microsoft's Picture and Fax viewer, then the meta-file information and file information doesn't work on any of my jpeg's, gif's, tiff's etc. I don't know why that is. Do you get the meta-file information on your PC when you hover your mouse over a jpeg when say Microsoft's Picture and Fax viewer is associated/open with? I'll just leave it set to open with Microsoft's Office Picture Manager unless you know of any remedy for the other viewers.
Anyway you have helped a lot and I can't thank you enough. At least it all works now. I wish I can reciprocate some how, but your knowledge is far above mine on this stuff. Thank you again and best regards. Greg. |
You are welcome Greg. :) I suspected that might be the case but I dont know why either. You could try posting in the MS Newsgroups for an answer from an expert in this area.
|
I'll do that. If I get a resolution/response in one of the MS newsgroups I'll post it here on this forum also, so anyone else can learn from it.
Now I know where to go if I run into any other OS issues. I just hope someone like yourself, or even better, you, will be there to help! Best wishes for the New Year! Greg. |
Thanks Greg and Happy New Year to you too. :D
