comctl32.dll missing?

Hi all, new to this and not overly great on the technical side of things, BUT.... not sure what I have done recently but run my mcafee FULL SCAN and it keeps stopping at 74/75% on searching comctl32.dll

I have been in touch with mcafee and they have suggested things, to no avail. I have also done system restore and that hasn't changed anything either, so not sure what else to try - could it be that the comctl32.dll has been removed which is why the scan keeps stopping on that part?

any idiots guided help would be appreciated

Welcome to CTH

This problem could be caused because you have installed a program which has its own, older version of comctl32.dll which is not compatible with Windows 7, and has replaced the version in the Windows folder.

If you have 32-bit windows, there will be only one at C:\Windows\System32. If you have 64-bit windows, there will be an additional one at C:\Windows\SysWOW64.

Was this an upgrade from a previous version of windows? Did it just start after the upgrade? or the problem just started on its own?

Just looked and I do have both the 32 and 64 in windows system, think it may have started since doing updates, not 100% sure. I am thinking of re-installing Windows 7 again, do you think this would help? Many thanks for your help so far. Caraline
