Laptop fails to reboot after Windows Update.

After Tuesday 8th Sept. updates, the daughters laptop developed a curious problem.

1) The updates automatically d/loaded until the progression screen reached 3/3.

2) The progression bar stayed at 0%, with the circle thingy still spinning, for roughly 5mins.

3) Then the laptop restarted itself without any prompting and came back to the 3/3 progression page.

4) Now all that happens when she starts the laptop is the same thing over and over again.

5) She's tried starting the laptop in Safe Mode and the problem persists.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried doing a system restore?

melter September 16th, 2009 03:42 PM

The laptop won't boot into windows, so she can't do a system restore unfortunately.

If you have a vista DVD you can do a system restore from there. See here.

She didn't get the Vista disk with the laptop. Usual thing for the UK, we just get the code sticker on the underside of the laptop. The OS is already activated before shipping.

If a friend has one you can use theirs. Just be sure to give it back. Any version of Vista will do; it doesn't have to match your version.

if you cannot find a vista dvd you can try the following and create a disk just for this purpose. It cannot be use to install or reinstall vista.

Thanks for the information. I'll d/load the disk over the weekend and post the results back on here.

Problem solved! Many thanks to jazz836062 for suggesting a system restore and thanks to renegade600 for the link to the repair disk when I couldn't beg, borrow or steal a vista disk!
