Hard drive, unusual sounds, smart Tests passed?
 

Hello.
I bought a WD black 2tb hard drive. didn't notice too much noise until i made it my windows boot drive.
After I installed Win 8.1 full on it and ran updates, after the updates were done there was a loud grinding chatter like noise. very loud.
now there are just quieter chatter noises, just a little bit louder than the review videos of others recording it. So not too concerned now. but there are a few random spikes in HD activity when just sitting doing nothing.
in WD diagnostic lifeguard, SMART test passed. bad sector test passed.
SO MY Questions are:
Is it really fine? I only have a few days to return to seller, if they would take it now. then rely on warranty.
And how can i see what the few random spikes in activity are caused by?

could always open the case and make sure it is securely installed. sometimes they vibrate making a noise when the screws are loose.

as far as random spikes, that is normal because you always have things running in the background that may be updating or whatever.

I agree with renegade600.

Though, you can dampen the vibration of the Hard Drive by using rubber grommets in the Hard Drive Mounts.

Remember: Heat Kills Electronics.

Currently, there seems to be a rash of new Hard Drive failures right now.
If your worried that you maybe are next, with your Hard Drive failing.
Keep a backup of it, and do backups at least once a week.
Or signup to a Cloud Backup Service.

Also, check your warranty for how long it is good for.
So, if it fails on you.
At least all your Data is safe, and you can send the Hard Drive in to be replaced.

I went over to BACKBLAZE, and looked at their current Drive Life Study Report.

It seems to support the fact that Seagate and Western Digital drives are not as reliable as they use too be.

So, I'd keep a close eye on that WD drive kaymicrager.
Put the best Hard Drive Cooler on it possible.
Plus, make regular Weekly or Daily backups, to cover your butt,
just in case the worst does happen.
