IDE vs. SATA

I currently have an IDE hard drive(160GB0 in my machine.
I can get a 500GB SATA drive pretty reasonable.
Question is Are they interchangable or not. I realise I will have to install SATA drivers , but can't seem to be able(even from Gateway)to find out if SATA is able to run on my machine.
Machine is Gateway E4100 (P4 3.4GHz HT, socket 478, Prescott)
Motherboard is Intel D865GLC
Any and all help is appreciated.

SATA has a different connector then ATA (IDE).

That motherboard supports the following;

Two (Master & Slave) ATA 66/100 connectors.
Two Serial ATA connectors (SATA150 1.5Gb/s)

So yes you can install a SATA hard drive. You should not need any drivers as the computer should recognize it.

A SATA cable:

So, now to open the case and find where the connector goes onto the motherboard.
Faster speed, smaller cable = better airflow = better performance.
Sounds like a win-win deal to me.
