RAM Upgrade

I have an HP Laptop running Win10. After a cleaning and anti virus check it is still sluggish. When I press a key in MS Word the letter does not appear instantly. (My other Win 10 computer the letter appears as soon as I press the key). I took it to a repair shop to upgrade the system from 6 GB to 16 GB. The repair shop told me my RAM was very specific and was a special order. He stated it would be better to install a Solid State Drive. It doesn't sound right to me.

Is RAM (DDR4) specific to a computer?

Depends on the model, but usually not. But 6gb memory is ample for Windows 10, sluggish should have nothing to do with that amount of memory.

What is the model of the laptop? Also it may not be able to handle 16gb.

Have you tried say Notepad to see if pressing keys you don't have the same problem? Could be a problem with OFFICE or the keyboard.
