The mice that died

USB mice won't work if I plug them into the rear ports of my Compaq desktop running Vista, but work just fine on the front ports.

I don't have any other grief from any of the ports.

What's the problem and how do I fix it so I always have the front ports fully available for other peripherals?

Thanks.

Get into BIOS SETUP 1st screen tells you how, check every menu item and make sure that any dealing with USB is enabled. Make any changes, save and exit.

Thanks. I did what I could in the Bios, and when that didn't help, I simply found a ps2 mouse (it didn't come with the computer) and plugged it in to the ps2 port, and problem resolved.

I'm speculating, but my guess is that Windows Vista, like its predecessors, needs a ps2 mouse on boot up to be truly happy.
