No internet with static IP

I just installed windows 7 and I'm trying to set a static IP for this computer but whenever I do, I lose internet access. I've tried disabling/enabling the adapter and restarting after the changes. Neither worked. I also tried disabling IPv6 to no avail. I had the same setup working fine on vista just a few days ago. Here's the output from ipconfig /all when DHCP is enabled:

I need the static IP so I can set up port forwarding on my router. Anyone know what would cause this?

What do you have for a modem/router?

With the static IP can you ping the default gateway?


Are there other machines on your LAN? You want to make sure you don't have an IP address conflict with one of them. It is best to use an IP address outside of the DHCP address range when assigning a static IP.

I went to set up the static IP again today and for some reason it worked. Then I turned on my laptop and it stopped working. So I decided to try pulling out the cable connecting my desktop and laptop and it worked again. It seems like its trying to connect to the internet through the wrong adapter. I tried switching the order under advanced settings but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Oh and the static IP im assigning is outside of the DHCP range

SO the machine you are setting up with a static IP has two NICs.

Can you run ipconfig/all and route print on that machine and post the output back here? Maybe we can get a better idea as to what is up with it.

Can you ping your default gateway? What happens if you set the static ip to the same one as DHCP assigns?

Just to make sure, the PC your are working on is not the laptop you mentioned above (and that one has DHCP on?

Yes I can ping the gateway when the static IP is set. And setting the static IP to the same as the DHCP given one still doesn't work. The PC I'm working on is not the laptop.

Just to explain my network setup (which is a bit weird):

Internet -> Modem -> Router A (No wireless) -> Desktop

                                   ------> Router B (wireless) -> Laptop
And my desktop, which has 2 NICs, connects to both Router A and the laptop. Like I mentioned before, this exact same setup was working fine in vista but I cant seem to get it work with windows 7.

Just to keep the cross chatter down, I'm going to pipe in here quickly with an explanation of what I believe is happening, but will have to think about what the solution should be and get back to you.


The problem can be seen in the last route print.

Since the metric for the 1.0.01 route is lower than the 192.168.40 route, that is what your PC will try for a default route.

Based on z1p's comment, my first thought is to clear the table and see if it solves the problem.

If you choose to do this,
>ipconfig /flushdns
then ping the default gateway. This should add the IP into the table.

Post the new table if this doesn't work.

Since you guys were saying it was a problem with the metric, I tried changing the interface metric to 1 in the advanced settings page and that seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the help guys.

Glad to here you're all set. Not sure why win7 wants to set the metric so high, but obviously manually setting it does the trick.
